How natural essential oils are made?

Natural essential oils contain the volatile principles extracted from different parts of plants. The result is a complex composition obtained from the combination of aromatic compounds, which are extracted by means of various techniques. The most widely used of these is steam distillation. This procedure consists of placing the different parts of the plant in a closed container and then subjecting it to steam under pressure. Thanks to the high temperatures, the essential oil is released and is carried away together with the water vapor. Finally, the vapor is cooled in a condenser and converted back to liquid. This is when the essential oil floats above the water, thus obtaining a 100% pure oil.

Other methods for the extraction of essential oils are cold pressing, enfleurage or saturation maceration and solvent extraction.
